This past weekend, Prince E and I went to visit my sister Kiki and her new baby. He was so scrumptiously cute that I wanted to eat his little ears. And his feet. And kiss his cheeks over and over.
I managed to carry him around and not worry about breaking him. For some reason he didn't seem as fragile as my other nephew did when I first held him at seven weeks, but I imagine it is more me and my maturity (ha!) than the actual difference between the babies.
Here are some photos of the little one (log in for more including his "My aunt is a hottie" shirt.)
As part of the preparation for my upcoming triathlon (as well as an effort to knock another thing of my 101 list), Prince E attempted to teach me how to use the fancy clipless pedals on my bicycle last weekend. Being that I am chicken, I opted to wear one regular shoe and one bike shoe, so that my right foot remained unconnected to the bike for safety.
We got out into the driveway in front of our apartment building and Prince E explained how to get my left foot in the fancy pedal. He said he wouldn't go too fast and then started up the sidewalk. I got my left foot hooked into the pedal, tried to move forward and promptly fell over onto the driveway.
I wanted to go upstairs and get my other regular shoe and give up on the whole thing, but he convinced me to keep trying. I eventually was able to get going and managed to ride around pretty easily. He also explained to me how to stop, which I practiced a few times in the neighboring church lot.
We then decided to bike to his work because he needed to pick something up. I made it there fine and without incident. Then it came time to stop. And I fell over again. The second fall was a bit worse as it scraped a bigger part of my leg and bruised part of my hand. Luckily though, nothing was broken and I managed to miss hitting my head on the nearby garbage can.
Undeterred I rode laps around the parking lot of his work, periodically stopping just to make sure I could. We had brought the other bike shoe with us and I tried, briefly, to use both shoes. We soon discovered though that there was some kind of defect, because even with all of my might, I could not easily get my right foot unhooked, even though the pedal was at the loosest setting.
I certainly did not feel safe enough to ride around with both shoes attached to the bike where there was a very good chance I wouldn't be able to easily get out of it when I needed to stop. So, we stopped the lesson and went to Dairy Queen.
Yesterday I rode my bike to the library, using two regular shoes and that was fun. I like the idea of being able to have an option to driving, especially to places like the library that talk to long to walk to. When I got home, I got out the step ladder and put my bike away all by myself way up onto the second rung of the bike rack. I was so proud of myself, I jumped down from the ladder with glee...and promptly caught the side of my thing on the hard back part of the couch, resulting in a nasty looking and even nastier feeling bruise.
Did I mention I also burned myself with a cookie sheet on Sunday? It has just been a klutzy kind of week. I realized today talking to my mom that I probably inherited it from her when she revealed that she badly bruised herself while changing the filter of her vacuum. Sounds like something I would do.
Yesterday was Kiki's baby shower. It went well, I think. Here are a few photos (many are friend/family only, so be sure to log in):
The fruit display that I created (with help from mom and Kiki):
One of the activities was to decorate onesies for the new baby using fabric paint. Here is one of the creations that Prince E made:
And here is one of mine:
The other fun activity involved me melting different kinds of candy bars and putting them into diapers. They were passed around and the guests had to "guess the poo." It made for some funny sights as people had to sniff the diapers to identify the candy.
We are in Michigan and made the pumpkin pecan pie again for Thanksgiving. The crust came out much better this time, as Prince E altered the recipe a bit. We also put tin foil on the crust to keep it from burning. News tomorrow on whether people thought it was yummy!
As an aside, it has now rained the last 10 times we have come to Michigan. Just saying.
The official race report is now up over Princess Runner.

I decided that I wanted to be adventurous and try to make turkey meatloaf this weekend. I had two recipes which I sort of mutated into my own creation. I actually made turkey meatloaf muffins, thinking that I could use the leftovers in something else, like a pasta dish.
The preparation was not too difficult, although I was not sure if I was adding too many breadcrumbs. Neither recipe gave a specific amount, so it required me to go by feel. I put the muffins in the oven and thought good thoughts.
The buzzer sounded after 23 minutes (the recipe that was for muffins said 25 minutes, but my oven is brand new and has cooked things faster than recipes have stated in the past).
Since it was turkey, I didn't want to take any chances of it being undercooked, so I got out Prince E's meat thermometer that he uses when he grills out. I stuck it in one of the meat loaf balls and the digital number moved slowly and it only got up to about 157 degrees (it is supposed to be 180), so I put it back in the oven.
A few minutes later I took it out and again the number slowly crept up, but not to 180. I put it back in and asked Prince E if the thermometer is always so slow-moving. He said that usually it just takes a few seconds.
I took the muffins out again and showed him what happens when I put the thermometer in. He said, "Well, you have to take the cover off first."
He then removed the little plastic cover to reveal a metallic pointy stick. He put it into the muffin and it instantly shot up, past 180.
I have not felt that stupid in a very very long time.
So, the meatloaf was pretty good, although a bit dry. Not sure if it was too many bread crumbs or just my excessive cooking.
Please tell me something stupid that you have done recently so I won't feel so bad!!
Prince E and I made reservations about two months ago for our anniversary dinner. The restaurant was recommended by one of his co-workers. It has a Hawaiian theme and since our wedding (and Honeymoon) did as well, we thought it would be perfect. We even would be treated to a hula dance show.
I had been looking forward to this for weeks and it was quite a disappointment.
When we arrived to the (half-empty) restaurant, we were escorted to a high round bar-type table. We immediately asked for a booth. She said that they were a full-house that night and we had to have the table. I was annoyed, especially because we were stuck in between two booths (each about three feet to either side of us) and it was not a very cozy/romantic location. I supposed that the booths would be reserved for larger parties and it was only fair.
The menu listed the special occasions that people in the restaurant were celebrating. It nicely listed our anniversary, but they spelled my first name wrong. Sort of like my wedding when the DJ pronounced our last name wrong.
Halfway through dinner a couple came in and was seated at a nice cozy corner both. Alone. Did they slip her a $20? Had they made reservations three months ago?? I was beyond irritated. Prince E tried to make me feel better by telling me that they probably never got to go to Hawaii and we did (so there).
There were some good points. The conversation was lovely. My drink was quite yummy.
Prince E and I were trying to have a nice conversation, reminiscing about Hawaii and all of the fun times and adventures we had there.
Then, about halfway through our meal, it started. A loud noise. It was quiet and first and then increased with every passing moment. It got louder. And more shrill. And more deafening. A woman with the most annoying/loud/awful/ear drum piercing/hideous laugh that I have ever head. The more she drank, the louder she got.
I wish I would have thought to record it on my cell phone. Instead, click below to listen to my reenactment, although it does not do her laugh justice. Keep in mind that she was less than five feet from my right year and the laughing did not stop. By the time we finished eating, there was still 45 minutes left before the show. I think I would have killed her had we stayed that long listening to her so we went home.
Yesterday morning (our actual anniversary), we went to breakfast at Steak and Shake. We made each other cards using crayons on the back of our place mats. My kind of date.
Happy Anniversary, Prince E, and thanks for a wonderful year full of joy and great blogable material. Next year, let's just order in.
My birthday extravaganza yesterday was quite wonderful. Both Prince E and I took off work, so it was a day dedicated solely to celebration!! Prince E woke me up at 5:00 a.m. by saying "IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY" and then singing. It was nice, except I had a little trouble falling back asleep, especially because Jiblets had to keep coming in the room to tell me "Happy Birthday!" too.
I had Steak and Shake at 10:30 a.m. (although I had neither steak nor a shake). Prince E drew me a card on his place mat. (we always take the crayons that are meant for kids and color on our place mats). After eating, we headed to Gameworks. An arcade is a lot more fun when it is almost completely empty. It was fairly quiet, we didn't have to wait for any of the games and I could try out dance, dance, revolution without be mocked by 12 year olds. We were pretty good once we realized that you were supposed to step when the arrow hit the top.
After turning in my tickets and getting a good assortment of crap (whoopie cushion, candy, etc.), we went to Toys R Us. We looked at the Wii games, but didn't find any to our liking. Prince E ended up buying me Phoenix Wright, Attorney for the DS. I have played it some and it is really cheesy, in a funny way. I just have to suspend reality to enjoy, it otherwise I would constantly be saying, "That is not how court procedure works!" over and over.
Then we came home and relaxed for a few hours. Yesterday was the hottest day of the year and was also extremely windy. So much so that the kitties could not go out on the balcony for fear they would blow away.
Later we headed to dinner. It was so delicious. I had a Mango tini to go with my Lemon Pepper Chicken. The mashed potatoes were so yummy. When we first sat down, the waitress asked if it was a special occasion. I said it was my birthday. She joked that she would have to bring in the cavalry to sing. I said if she did that I would have to leave (I would be too embarrassed!). After our dishes were cleared, we waited awhile for her to come with the dessert tray. We thought she had forgotten about us. Then she came over with the a piece of cake with a candle in it! She said no singing, just cake. YAY! It was so good and I even managed to let Prince E have some.
After dinner, we watched So You Think You Can Dance and I received a birthday reward of that annoying Olivia girl being kicked off. She whined too much.
All in all, a wonderful birthday.
Oh, and the presents in the photos that I posted previously was a Garmin Forerunner 305 and footpod. Yay!!
