So Yummy. Avocado, cucumber, and asparagus.
101 in 1001 list (Also completed #49. Dine at three new (to me) local restaurants)
I completed #13 on my list twice this week. On Tuesday, I conquered a small hill and then yesterday, with the encouragement of Prince E, I took on a bigger hill (actually it was the ice-covered road, but whatever). I also took an adventurous journey down the side of one hill, across a road, and down another hill before I was able to stop. There are rarely any cars on this particular road, so it is not as dangerous as it sounds.
Some photographic evidence will come later, once I am back at home (with a bit faster internet connection).
Today Prince E and I spent some quality time at the local high school trying to sell several recent sewing projects that I have completed. I had a wide variety of items (girl-sized dresses, purses, nursing covers, child-sized hats, aprons, etc.)
Unfortunately we were very small fish in a big pond and nothing sold. I got a lot of compliments on my "Babies for Obama" onesie, as well as my socks and aprons, but no buyers. I even tried slashing prices, but it did not do any good. From what I could tell, most people were buying three things at the craft show: (1) Food (the fudge booth next to us did well); (2) Wooden snowmen on stakes to put in a yard; and (3) Some kind of giant hula hoop exercise thing.
Since Merriam-Webster defines "sell" as "(2): to offer for sale," I am counting #58 on my list completed. I can't believe the two things I tried to cross of my list this weekend were both unsuccessful.
Here are some photos of the event. Be sure to log in for a photo of Prince E wearing one of the child-sized hats in an effort to encourage sales.
I will likely try to sell many of the items on Etsy.com or, if that doesn't work, give them as gifts.
I had never donated blood before today. There was a time in my 20s when I was repeatedly ineligible due to recent tattoo-getting activity. However, since I have not gotten a tattoo in several years, I no longer had an excuse.
I showed up at village hall for my appointment and went through all the preliminary steps fairly quickly. When I got to the donating chair, however, the woman could not find a usable vein in either arm. She called another woman over, who managed to find a small one on my left arm.
The second woman took over and set everything up, but for some reason the blood would not come out properly. She told me that I did not consume enough fluids, but I know that is not true because I have been drinking extra water the last couple days in preparation for the appointment. I did not like that she did not believe me when I told her that. She seemed annoyed that my body would not cooperate and even told me that I was moving my arm too much, even though I was only moving my hand to squeeze the ball as I was told.
Eventually she gave up and sent me on my way without making a usable donation. Despite that, I am still counting #74 on my list as complete because I did everything I could to complete it.
I had planned to take pictures of the whole process, but only have this one picture because it did not go as planned. This is me in the chair with the stuff on my lap before I was attended to.
Although I have carved many a pumpkin in my day, as has Prince E, we have never carved pumpkins together. We finally got around to it today, and in the process I completed #100 on my 101 in 1001 list.
I will confess that we did use stencils to carve the kitty (me) and crow (Prince E). My free-hand pumpkin carving would not be nearly so pretty.
This weekend I was able to see all three of my nephews and they were able to finally wear the clothing that I made for them on my sewing machine. The two older boys each got a pair of Cars shorts and the little one got the jumper that I posted a photo of previously. The boys liked their Cars shorts and I was impressed that the shorts managed to hold up through a lot of rough and tumble play.
You can read all about it on my Princess Runner blog. The recap was so long, that I had to split it into two parts:
Danskin Chicagoland 2008: The Day Before
Danskin Chicagoland 2008: Race Day
I have wanted to get my hair cut for several weeks now because it has gotten too long, especially now that the weather has been hot. I was going to go back to the $9.99 place, but was not really looking forward to it. Prince E offered to cut it for me. You may remember that the last time that he cut it, it came out quite well. As a result, I was not at all hesitant to have him do it.
As I said, my hair had gotten very long, so I had him cut off four inches. It was going all swimmingly as he did the first side and then the back. When he finished the left side, however, he got a strange look on his face. "Um. I messed up," he said. Knowing his nature, I thought it was kidding. He said that he was not kidding, unless I wanted to have a new style.
He had cut one side about three inches shorter than the other.
We are still not sure how it happened, although I think it was a combination of my hair drying, it starting to curl, and that the scissors had a mind of their own.
Here is a photo after he realized the mistake (You have to log in; it is neighborhood only):
After he cut the other side and the back to match, though, it really doesn't look too bad. It still is not quite perfect and I will probably have to do a bit more cutting after it dries and I can get a proper look at it, but at least I will be more aerodynamic for the triathlon on Sunday.
And if you are wondering, I am definitely counting this as #29 on my list: get a radical haircut. Even though it was not intentional, it is certainly radical for me.
As an aside, when I looking through my archives to find the photo from the previous haircut (which I could not find), I came across this post. I guess we are even now. And how funny is it that I used almost the exact same title on that post? My creativity is lacking. Maybe it was in my hair.
I decided on Friday afternoon that this past weekend would be the one where I tried to tackle #37 on my list of 101 in 1001: Go 48 hours without using the internet. Since it was the start of a three day weekend, I would not need to worry about having to use the internet or e-mail for work, so it was a good weekend to do it. I did not find it as difficult to stay away as I thought it would and really did not have to fight any urges to check e-mail or blogs or watch videos on YouTube. I guess because it was a holiday weekend, but I was surprised to find only about 40 new e-mails when the hiatus ended on Sunday.
Here is a list of some of what I accomplished this weekend because I wasn't sitting in front of my computer:
* Watched Raging Bull OnDemand, which means I am one movie closer to completing #71 on my list.
* Went biking and running on Friday, practicing my bike to run transition in between.
* Biked for 10.3 miles on Saturday.
* Ran a 5k time trial on Sunday. I was going to run in a 5k race but slept late instead.
* Sat in the shade in the front yard and watched Prince E work on the car.
* Acted as Prince E's assistant as he worked on the car.
* Finished another level in Cake Mania 2.
* Finally got my shower drain unclogged (actually I assisted Prince E)
* Cleaned my bathroom.
* Went to Target just for fun, like I used to do.
* Went to see Wanted (Enjoyed it a lot. I thought Chicago looked very pretty).
* Watched three episodes of Flipping Out.
* Slept into a blissfully late hour of past 7:00 am both Saturday and Sunday.
* Watched a lot of baseball.
* Watched the Tour de France live on Sunday morning.
There was probably more, but that is all I remember right now and since I couldn't blog about it as it happens I have forgotten it. From the list it looks like a lot of television. I am sure had I tried to tackle #36 (go 48 hours without the television) it would have been a lot more difficult.
